Welcome to Shedd Aquarium’s Early Science Learning professional development digital badging program! Educators who take part in this program will explore topics surrounding inquiry-based early science learning within an online community of educators while gaining valuable classroom connections.
What is the purpose of this program?
The goal of this program is to offer a flexible, interactive professional development program for early science learning educators that brings together a community of educators.
- learn about inquiry as a student-centered science experience.
- discover tips for maximizing the classroom environment to encourage science exploration.
- gain strategies to empower young learners in the inquiry classroom.
- uncover tips for creating a student-centered classroom.
- learn about inquiry skills, their meaning and how to implement them in your classroom.
What will I do in this program?
As an educator, you will complete a series of missions which are mini-lessons and activities surrounding inquiry-based learning, inquiry skills and early science learning topics. After a brief introduction, you will dive into the inquiry process by trying out techniques and lessons in your classroom. Finally, you will learn how to sustain inquiry and inform others about the great work you do in your classroom. All teachers who complete the program will receive 20 CPDUs, digital badges to share on social networks and a signed letter to present to their administrators.
What is digital badging and how does it work?
Digital badging is unlike any type of professional development you’ve participated in before! To complete missions, you may be asked to take pictures, watch videos, interact with other educators and discover new resources. One of the best features of digital badging is that it’s completely at your own pace. You will be able to complete all missions from the comfort of your home and classroom, with consistent support from Shedd Aquarium staff members. You will have the ability to ask questions and receive assistance throughout all aspects of the program.
